This is akin to breaking up "silos". In another article I read a couple of months ago, this was also called out. Evernote had originally organized its teams around specific platforms, which was a huge catalyst for the woes they are trying to right currently.

Evernote would be a great case study for those wishing to learn how NOT to structure engineering teams. I'm glad they have woken up and are running in another direction that should produce great results.
